Office for Trans Matters
The Landeskoordination Trans* NRW, the office for trans matters in North Rhine-Westphalia, seeks to support groups and services for and/or by trans people in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as to educate and inform specialists, public institutions and the society as a whole about gender diversity and the needs of (binary and non-binary) trans people.
The office is funded by the Ministry for Children, Family, Refugees and Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Ministerium für Kinder, Familie, Flüchtlinge und Integration des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen). The Cologne-based office is part of Queeres Netzwerk NRW e. V. (Queer Network NRW) and cooperates closely with NGVT* NRW e. V. (Gender Diversity & Trans Network NRW). Since December 2018, the position is held by Mika Schäfer.
The office promotes networking between the various local and regional trans groups, initiatives and counselling services. It contributes to the quality and viability of a work that is often carried out by volunteers through knowledge transfer (e.g. in the form of events and publications), through counselling, and through cooperation with specialists and public authorities. It also supports new groups in their first steps.
In cooperation with the board of NGVT* NRW, the office assesses the needs of North Rhine-Westphalia’s trans groups and individuals, and initiates and assists the joint elaboration of their demands. Based on this, it represents the interests of North Rhine-Westphalia’s trans people vis-à-vis policymakers and other agents and works together with the Ministry for Children, Family, Refugees and Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Additionally, it offers bespoke events and material addressing trans people’s needs and realities to professionals from North Rhine-Westphalia belonging to different sectors, such as healthcare, nursing, employment and education. The office for trans matters also brings its specialist knowledge to expert groups and advisory boards.
North Rhine-Westphalia’s general public represents another target group of this educational work. Media representatives are also invited to contact the office.
